>

Jackie Salit, the President of Independent Voting, is sending a Letter to Tom Perez, Chair of the Democratic National Committee (DNC), and is Inviting Independent Activists to Join her in this Outreach. The Letter urges that he meet with a Group of Independent Leaders and take the decisive step of Opening the 2020 Presidential Primaries and Caucuses to independent Voters.

I write on behalf of the 34 million independent voters who cast their ballots on Election Day. I am the President of Independent Voting, the country’s largest organization of independent voters. I am joined in this outreach by leaders and activists from our network. We represent America’s growing community of independents, now 44% of the electorate. We come from across the country and from all walks of life, from diverse backgrounds and communities.

They are going to Add Signers through Sunday night.

It is misleading for this letter to say that independent voters are 44% of the electorate. That statistic comes from polling data, but substantial research has shown that most of the people who tell pollsters they are independents are not telling the truth. It would be far better if this letter mentioned that 28.7% of the voters who live in states that ask voters to choose a party, or independent status, have chosen independent status. That is an objectively true statement that cannot be disputed. Furthermore, the purpose of the letter is to help the voters who are registered independent. Someone who is really registered as a Republican or a Democrat, but who tells a pollster that he or she is independent, has no beef with any state election law regarding voting in a presidential primary.
