Tell Germany's EBRD No More Public Money for Dirty Fossil Gas

Right now, we have an Opportunity to Redirect Billions of Dollars away from the Fossil Fuel Industry, but it all hinges on an Obscure International Bank, and on Germany doing the Right Thing.

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) is one of the World’s Biggest Multilateral Lenders, and it’s Currently Revising its Energy Lending Strategy to determine what kind of Projects to Spend Taxpayers’ Money on. Last year, the World Bank made the Major Announcement that it would Stop Funding All Oil, Gas, and Coal Extraction, setting a Precedent that other Banks must now Match or Exceed.

Thanks to pressure, the EBRD is considering going One Step further and Blocking the Funding of All Oil, Gas, and Coal Infrastructure. But Germany’s Representatives at the Bank have been dragging their feet and Joining with other Climate-Destructive Actors, trying to Block Progress and Water Down the Commitment to make it less Ambitious, particularly on Dirty Fossil Gas.

With this Summer’s Record Heat Waves around the Globe, it’s more clear than ever that we must Stop using Taxpayer Funds to Finance Fossil Fuels. The Good News is that Global momentum to Stop Funding Fossils is Stronger than ever. Dozens of German Institutions have Committed to Divest from Fossil Fuels, including the Capital Region of Berlin. Allianz, a German Company and Major European Insurer, announced this Summer that it will Completely Stop Selling Insurance for Coal Projects, and is working on a Full Phase-Out. And just a few weeks ago, Ireland became the First Nation in the World to Legislate Full Divestment from Fossil Fuels.

This is a Crucial Juncture for Germany’s Global Reputation, they're Slipping Further and Further away from their Former Position as a Climate Leader. Despite Claiming Publicly that Europe must become Less Dependent on Fuel from Russia, Germany has continued to Promote the Dangerous and Unnecessary Nord Stream 2 Fossil Gas Pipeline over Loud Objections from the German Public.

And Recent Projections show that Germany will badly Miss its 2020 Climate Targets, making it more Imperative than ever that the Country Stops Throwing Fuel on the Fire and Starts Planning for a Just Transition to Clean Energy.
