House Republicans Passed a Symbolic Resolution Wednesday against granting Undocumented Immigrants the Right to Vote.
The Measure, essentially a Protest against a handful of Cities that sought to Permit Undocumented Immigrants to Vote in certain Local Elections like School Boards, could give House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA 23rd District) a degree of Cover with Immigration Hard-Liners within his Caucus.
With Speaker Paul Ryan stepping down at the end of the year, McCarthy is positioning himself into the Role of Republican Leader, but he faces possible Competition from Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-LA 1st District) and Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH 4t district), both of whom maintain a more Conservative profile.
“He’s got a potentially competitive speaker’s race,” said Matt Mackowiak, a Texas-based Republican Consultant. “He’s obviously trying to balance competing power centers within the conference.”
At a Press Event Wednesday morning, McCarthy struck a Hawkish tone on Immigration, deriding a “new movement that's going on around the country about allowing illegals to vote in our elections, disenfranchising Americans."
He echoed that Sentiment in Remarks on the House Floor later in the day, and called out San Francisco and other Cities for Approving Undocumented Immigrants Voting. “If you are an American citizen in one of these cities, your vote in local elections counts less now than it did before,” he said. “You can thank your local politicians for that.”
Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-NY 10th District), Ranking Member of the House Judiciary Committee, called the Resolution “nothing more than a bald-faced political stunt concocted by the majority in an attempt to stir up its political base ahead of the midterm election.” The Measure Passed with 279 in Favor, 72 Opposed, and 69 Voting “Present”, essentially not taking a side.
