MO Judge Rules Governor has Authority to Appoint Lieutenant Governor

Missouri Gov. Mike Parson (R) had the Authority to Appoint Senate Majority Floor Leader Mike Kehoe as Lieutenant Governor, according to a Decision from Cole County Circuit Judge Jon Beetem.

The Judge Dismissed a Case brought by the Missouri Democratic Party in June 2018 that argued, the lieutenant Governor Vacancy should be filled only by Election and asked the Court to Nullify Kehoe's Appointment.

Parson was sworn in as Governor after former Gov. Eric Greitens (R) Resigned on May 29th, 2018.

Emily Waggoner, the Missouri Democratic Party's Executive Director, said the Group was considering an Appeal. "We strongly believe that Missourians deserve the opportunity to vote for their Lieutenant Governor," she said.

Gov. Parson said Judge Beetem's Decision Affirmed his Position and that of previous Governors from both Parties. Lt. Gov. Kehoe said, "I am grateful for, and agree with, Judge Beetem's ruling."
