Phoenix, Arizona, could follow Tempe in an effort to root out Secretive Campaign Donations from City Elections.
The Phoenix City Council Wednesday took the first step toward Curbing the Influence of “Dark Money”, Campaign Donations made by Political Non-Profits that do not have to Disclose their Donors.
This Money is typically spent on things like Robocalls, Television Ads, and Campaign Mailers and often takes the Form of Negative Attack Ads.
Mayor Greg Stanton (D) and Council Members Kate Gallego (D-8th District) and Debra Stark (D-3rd District), requested City Staff to Draft an Amendment to the City’s Charter that requires Political Non-Profits to Disclose the Sources of “Major Contributions used to Influence City Elections”.
Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton will soon leave his post as the Leader of the Nation's Fifth-Largest City to run for Congress. Stanton declared his Candidacy for the Congressional Seat currently held by Rep. Kyrsten Sinema (D-Phoenix), who is challenging Republican Sen. Jeff Flake. Congressional 9th District is considered a Swing District, though Sinema, a moderate Democrat, won in each Election since the District was established following the 2010 Census. The District contains most of Tempe and parts of Chandler, Scottsdale, Mesa, Ahwatukee, and North Phoenix.
