Minnesota’s Gov. Mark Dayton picked Lt. Gov. Tina Smith to replace Sen. Al Franken.
Smith not only would be an immediate placeholder for Franken, but also would run in the November 2018 Special Election to serve out Franken’s term. Minnesota will conduct another Election for the Seat in November 2020 for a full, six-year Term.
Smith is a native of Albuquerque, New Mexico, and has lived in Minnesota since the mid-1980s. She managed the abbreviated Senate Campaign of former Vice President Walter Mondale in 2002 after the death of Sen. Paul Wellstone (D-MN), just days before the Mid-Term Election.
