Trump's Trans Military Ban Hits Roadblock

A D.C. Federal Judge on Monday Blocked Key parts of President Trump’s Plan to Bar Members of the Transgender Community from Serving in the Military, saying it’s likely the Policy Violates the Fifth Amendment.

U.S. District Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly Partially Enjoined the Policy at the Request of Transgender Service Members who Sued in August, saying the Portions of the Rule Extending an Existing Bar against Members of the Transgender Community Joining the Military and calling for the Discharge of Current Transgender Service Members are likely Illegal.

Lawyers from two prominent LGBTQ Advocacy Organizations filed the Lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia on behalf of Five Transgender Service Members with almost 60 years of Combined Military Service. The Five Plaintiffs have Served in the Air Force, the Coast Guard, and the Army.

The National Center for Lesbian Rights (NCLR) and GLBTQ Legal Advocates & Defenders (GLAD) filed the Suit, Doe v. Trump, in Response to President Trump’s Full ban on Transgender People serving in the United States Military. The ACLU also filed a Request for Documents related to the Ban.

“Trump’s directive to exclude transgender people from military service has created a tidal wave of harms that have already been felt throughout our armed services,” Shannon Minter, a Transgender Legal Expert and NCLR Legal Director, said in a Statement. “Transgender service members have been blindsided by this shift and are scrambling to deal with what it means for their futures and their families. The President’s mistreatment of these dedicated troops will serve only to weaken and demoralize our armed forces.”
