NY DMV Readies for Airport Security Rule Taking Effect in 2018

Since the tail end of the Obama Administration the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has been warning Travelers that effective Jan. 22nd, 2018, Driver's Licenses will be considered Valid ID at Airports only if they are issued by a REAL ID–Compliant State.

So, is New York a Compliant State? A Visit to the State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) website does not quite answer the question.

"DMV expects that all driver licenses, permits and ID cards will remain acceptable for domestic flights and for access to federal facilities until October 1, 2020," it says. "New York will start issuing the REAL ID document on October 30, 2017, and you can convert to a REAL ID document at any time after that."

Homeland Security says: "Once a state becomes compliant it means that it has begun issuing REAL ID compliant documents. States then need to bring all residents interested in obtaining a REAL ID-compliant document into their motor vehicle administration offices to complete the process and receive their new license or ID. This can take months, if not years, and is why DHS established the card-based enforcement date as October 1, 2020, to give states the time needed to re-credential their residents."

New York will be in Compliance when it begins issuing REAL IDs at the end of this month, so its old IDs will be accepted at Airports for another 35 Months. After that, only REAL IDs will be.
