RI and IL Automatic Voter Registration Update

Thanks to Richard Winger of Ballot Access News for this post.

On June 30th, the Rhode Island Legislature passed HB 5702.

HB 5702, provides that Persons who apply to the DMV for a Driver's License, Renewals, or Personal Identification Document shall simultaneously be Register to Vote, unless they expressly Decline to do so.

A similar Bill, SB1933, had already passed the Illinois Legislature, and on June 29th was forwarded to the Governor. If passed, it would Automatically Register Eligible Voters if they visit the Secretary of State’s Offices or other State Agencies. It also allows People to Opt Out of Registering to Vote.

Both the Rhode Island and Illinois Governors have said they will sign the Bills.

When they do, Ten States will have Automatic Voter Registration.

Thanks for the list of states. There are typos in a few of them, relating to years far in the future.
