NY State Senator to Introduce Bill to Limit Port Authority from Carrying Out Trump Travel Ban

A New York State Senator is squaring up to fight President Trump's Travel Ban with new Legislation centered on the Port Authority.

Michael Gianaris (D-12th District) said he plans to propose a Bill that limits the Port Authority from carrying out Trump's latest Executive Order.

He said it is within the State's power to bar the Trump Administration from using the Agency's personnel and facilities.

The Queens State Senator said the President's order goes too far.

"Certainly the balance is not to issue a blanket order that at its core is really intended to just keep people who believe in a certain religion from entering the country," Gianaris said in a phone interview with NY1 on Sunday morning. "That's outrageous and it's as un-American as it gets in a country that values freedom of religion.

"There's a vetting process that's in place," Gianaris continued. "If vetting needs to be tweaked then we should tweak it, but the answer cannot be to take a giant sledgehammer and block everyone from certain countries, essentially, from coming into the U.S."

Gianaris called the Travel Ban Unconstitutional, and he urged those affected to learn what are their rights.

He plans to introduce his Bill today.
