NY Demand Democracy Agenda

This spring we’ve been reminded yet again how badly New York’s political system needs reform.

April’s Primary highlighted New York’s low voter turnout and antiquated registration process. Then May brought the sentencing of former Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos and former Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver on corruption charges.

Enough is enough.

The Demand Democracy platform calls for:

Publicly Funded Elections by Matching small contributions with public dollars to elevate the voice of everyday New Yorker.

Campaign Finance Reform by: Closing Loopholes; Lower Contribution Limits; Overturn Citizens United.

Modernized Voting Process with: Automatic Registration; Online Access; Flexible Voting opportunities.

Expanded & Protecting Voting Rights by: Investigate purging of Voter Rolls; Train, support and oversee Boards of Elections; Voting rights for 40,000 New Yorkers' on Parole.

Ethics Reform with: No pensions for Convicted Officials; No personal use of Campaign Funds; No secret Outside Income; Politicians should work for all the people.

Expanding and protecting democracy in New York State is vital to all the other issues we work on. As long as our Elections and Legislators can be bought by a small group of wealthy individuals and companies, the voices and needs of poor and working people will fall on deaf ears in Albany. We can’t allow this dynamic to continue.

Our elected officials still have time to take action on these issues this session, but they will need to feel public pressure in order to do so. Please sign and share the Demand Democracy petition today.
