Race to Replace RNC Chairman Reince Priebus Begins

The 2016 election hasn’t yet entered the homestretch but the race to become the GOP’s next Chairman is already underway.

Later this month, as Republicans gather in Cleveland for their National Convention, Robert Graham, who heads the Arizona Republican Party, will host what amounts to an informal kickoff for his likely bid for Republican National Committee (RNC) Chairman.

According to numerous RNC officials, Graham has already begun the process of introducing himself to the 168 RNC members who will select the Party’s Chair after the November election. The event in Cleveland, several people familiar with its planning said, is designed to generate exposure for Graham as he maneuvers for the job.

While the current GOP Chairman, Reince Priebus, has not said what’s next for him, most Party insiders don’t expect him to seek reelection. Priebus has held the post since 2011.

Amy Frederick, a Graham adviser, said: “Robert’s focus is on winning Arizona for our nominees in November, and the convention is the start of the fall campaign. We want our people, as well as the grass roots, and all the states to return home ready and motivated for victory.”

Graham isn’t the only one interested. Matt Pinnell, a former Oklahoma GOP Chairman who is the RNC’s National State Party Director, is also widely seen by Republican officials as a likely contender.

At this early stage, assessing the field of possible candidates is difficult. Should Trump win the Presidency, he will have a large say over who heads the Party. Should Republicans lose, the race for Chair could be wide open and could become a forum for a debate over the future of the GOP.
