Poor Children to Lose School Lunch

Republicans in Congress continue to wage a “War on Children.”

Millions of children receive free lunch in high-poverty schools. Now Republicans are proposing literally taking food out of their mouths.

Rep. Todd Rokita, best known for comparing African Americans who vote Democratic to “slaves,” introduced a bill, Improving Child Nutrition and Education Act of 2016 (H.R. 5003), that would change the Community Eligibility Program (CEP) for school lunches to cut the number of schools providing free and reduced price food in high-poverty schools.

CLICK HERE for information about H.R. 5003.

The CEP is a provision from the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 that allows schools and Local Educational Agencies (LEAs) with high poverty rates to provide free breakfast and lunch to all students. CEP eliminates the burden of collecting household applications to determine eligibility for school meals, relying instead on information from other means-tested programs such as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program and Temporary Assistance for Needy Families.

3.4 million low-income children could lose their midday meals. And hungry students just can’t learn. Cutting food programs for school kids is terrible and heartless public policy.

But if we all make a lot of noise, we can force Congress to stop this war on kids.
