The Green Party Presidential Nominating Convention will be held on the Campus of the University of Houston, 4800 Calhoun Road, Houston, Texas from August 4-7. This is the first Green Party convention to be held in the South and likely the latest Nominating Convention of any party.
The convention will feature skill-building and issue-based workshops, speeches, National Delegate meetings, Committee and Caucus meetings and visits from international Greens.
Different states have different methods for choosing Green Party delegates, including Party Primaries, Caucuses and State Conventions. At the National Convention, Green Party State Delegations will elect nominees for President and Vice-President on Saturday, August 6, 2016, following floor rules prescribed by the party. The cumulative vote of the Convention Delegates determines the Green Party Presidential nominee.
Candidates seeking the nomination must meet the Green Party's recognition criteria. Candidates must establish a Campaign Committee and website, demonstrate grassroots support within the Green Party, achieve fundraising milestones and meet other requirements.
The Green Party of the United States formally recognized two candidates for the 2016 Green Presidential nomination, in accordance with party rules:
Jill Stein - is a physician practicing Internal Medicine. She has served on the Board of Greater Boston Physicians for Social Responsibility and helped found the Massachusetts Coalition for Healthy Communities. She also serves on the Board of MassVoters for Fair Elections. Dr. Stein ran as a Green candidate for Governor of Massachusetts in 2002 and 2010. She was elected to a Lexington (Massachusetts) Town Meeting seat in 2005 and 2008. Dr. Stein was the Green Party's 2012Ppresidential nominee.
William Kreml - is the Distinguished Professor Emeritus in the Department of Political Science at the University of South Carolina and the author of nine books on political theory, American Government, and Constitutional law. His latest work is "The Bias of Temperament in American Politics" (2014). Dr. Kreml ran for President in the New Hampshire and other Primaries in 1984, and in the 1992 South Carolina Primary. He competed in the South Carolina Democratic Caucuses in 2000, running on the issue of Campaign Finance reform and engaging in civil disobedience by violating F.E.C. guidelines.
Both candidates have fulfilled all the requirements for official recognition, qualifying their campaigns for access to Party resources.
