Independent Voter Project

The Independent Voter Project (IVP) and its sister organization the Foundation for Independent Voter Education publish IVN.us, a new kind of news network. IVN.us provides unfiltered political news and policy analysis across the political spectrum.

IVN.us has a unique open-editorial platform that allows independent contributors from all sectors of industry and all walks of life to publish their own stories, which then reach a national audience of over 5 million online users per month. IVN.us also provides a forum for users to engage in political dialogue and rational commentary, in an effort to elevating the level of our public discourse.

IVN began as caivn.org, and during the 2008 and 2010 election cycles averaged 150,000 unique visitors each day. The new IVN.us network was BETA tested at the end of 2011, and was officially launched in January 2012. During the 2012 election season, IVN.us reached over a 1.5 million visitors.

IVN is committed to the belief that democracy functions best when the most people participate. Today’s political climate discourages such a participatory democracy. This is evidenced by the fact that current Congressional approval rating is just over 10%. Trust in the news media is under 40%. And, most importantly, voters are fleeing the parties in record numbers, with 40% of Americans self-identified as independent voters.

IVP is the founding member of a state-by-state legal strategy that brings together a coalition of organizations from across the political spectrum for the exclusive purpose of protecting the voting rights of the individual voter to participate fully and equally at all important stages of the election process.

IVP is committed to the belief that democracy functions best when the most people participate. Unfortunately, today’s political climate discourages such a participatory democracy and alienates independent-minded voters, who feel out of touch with the extreme partisanship of today’s politics. The news currently being presented by traditional media outlets only furthers to alienate independent-minded voters by presenting only right-wing and/or left-wing perspectives to truly complex, multifaceted political issues.

It's ironic that IVP and IVN say their goal is to maximize the number of people who participate in elections. They support the California top-two system, which has caused the two lowest primary turnouts in California history (2014 and 2012). Also top-two caused California voter turnout to drop between November 2010 and November 2014 more than any other state. California is the only state in which the November 2014 turnout rate was less than seven-tenths of the November 2010 turnout rate.

In November 2010 California voters had six parties to choose from for all the statewide offices, and write-in space as well. But in November 2014 Californians had to vote for a Democrat or a Republican for all statewide offices, or they couldn't vote at all, not even by write-in. Top two started in California in 2011.
