The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) commissioners will likely field questions on an upcoming vote to offer Internet subsidies for low-income Americans, WC Docket No. 11
-42, Lifeline and Link Up Reform and Modernization.
The FCC already offers phone subsidies through the Lifeline program, but the agency is considering an update to extend those subsidies to Internet service.
Lifeline internet service is for persons who meet certain eligibility requirements set by each State where the service is to be provided. These requirements are based on a person’s participation in a State or Federal support programs or by meeting the Income Poverty Guidelines as defined by the U.S. Government. The service is limited to one person per household.
A group of nearly two-dozen Internet service providers, wireless carriers and public interest groups sent a letter yesterday supporting the plan, with reforms.
That includes removing the burden on telecommunications carriers for deciding whether customers are eligible for the program.
