On December 15, the Kentucky Republican Party informed the State Board of Elections not to hold a Republican Presidential Primary.
Instead the party will hold a caucus.
Although the party had made that decision several months ago, it waited until December 15 to make the decision binding.
Paper ballots will be used.
Candidates have until January 7, 2016 to file and pay the filing fee.
Republican Rand Paul says he has contributed $250,000 and pledged another $200,000 to pay for the GOP Presidential Caucus in 2016. This will allow Paul to run for President and Senate re-election on the same ballot and avoid violating a State law banning candidates from appearing on the ballot twice.
Paul says the caucus will cost an estimated $400,000 to $500,000. More money would come from large filing fees paid by the other caucus candidates.
With the funding source and potentially complicated Senate race on the one hand, many state members also feel on the other, that moving to the caucus would boost the state's importance in the primary, which would make for a more exciting race than most Presidential years.
So far eight candidates have paid the $15,000 filing fee.
