Canada looking at a Different Election System

On December 4, 2015, the new Canadian government set its agenda before Parliament.

The new government pledged that the election system will be revamped in time for the next election. The government will study whether proportional representation or Instant Runoff Voting should be used.

In accordance with custom, the speech, written by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, was delivered by the representative of Queen Elizabeth, Governor General David Johnston.

Trudeau's pledge on electoral reform, promising to “take action to ensure that 2015 will be the last Federal election conducted under the first-past-the-post voting system.
