NY's WEP Party Update

The Women's Equality Party (WEP) was the focus of many court challenges this year. Where is the party headed?

Due to notarization problems, the WEP was blocked from running candidates in a number of counties this year, but recent appellate court decisions seem to have left Gov. Cuomo's allies firmly in control of the party.

Of the 58 local boards of elections in New York, 54 have posted detailed preliminary results from last Tuesday’s election. The WEP was on the ballot in 19 of the counties. In 16 of them, at least one candidate running on the party’s line ran in a single-victor race. There were 111 elections that fit this description.

In 15 of the 16 counties, 98 WEP candidates who were on the ballot.

The WEP might have made a difference in the Oyster Bay Supervisor’s race, where Democratic challenger John Mangelli led by 68 votes after receiving 301 votes on the WEP line.

Given the party's origins, it's not surprising that WEP candidates were cross-endorsed by liberal party members. Among the 111 WEP candidates examined, 108 also had the Democratic line; 46 the Independence line; 11 the Conservative line; and eight the Green line. None had the Republican line.

A majority of the candidates backed by the WEP party were men. In the 111 races analyzed, 51 of the WEP candidates were women candidates.
