Today, the Maine Secretary of State determined that the initiative for Instant Runoff Voting, for all federal and state office except President, does have enough valid signatures, nearly 70,000. Supporters of the measure were required to submit 61,123.
Under the citizens initiative process, with enough valid signatures, lawmakers must consider the proposal in the January 2016 session. Per the initiated petition process in the Maine Constitution, they do not have the option to amend the language.
If lawmakers reject it, then it will appear on the November 2016 ballot.
