The new CEO of the MAYDAY PAC, Zephyr Teachout, can't wait to overturn Citizens United and get rid of super PACs.
She writes: "The bad news is that President Obama is not using his final term for this critical issue, and none of the Republican Presidential candidates have supported it. Hillary Clinton continues to stay quiet on the issue as well: last month she suggested that she supported public financing, but there's no evidence she is treating it as something she'd fight for. (Remember we at MAYDAY are bi-tri-quad-partisan -- we want every candidate's support!".
Last week, Bernie Sanders called for the public financing of elections and she has reason to hope it will become central to his campaign. Martin O'Malley has called for public financing as well, and she is hoping it becomes part of his daily stump.
MAYDAY co-founder Lawrence Lessig is planning a run for President of the United States of America to promote his agenda for fundamental reform. MAYDAY is a super PAC; he is a candidate. This means Lessig will no longer have a role in MAYDAY. However, it also means he will be taking his work as a radical constitutional patriot to a new, important arena. He says: “It may be time to acknowledge openly what many have feared for some time: That on the issue of fundamental reform, an ordinary President may not be able to lead.”.
MAYDAY is pleased to see public financing of elections gaining traction among Presidential candidates. It's incredibly important. But they are not going to rest until they have more candidates on board, not just making statements, but campaigning on concrete actions in support of fundamental reform.
They are not going to rest until Congress pushes back against illegitimate and concentrated power and puts in place public financing. After all, whoever is elected President will need a Congress to write, pass, and send a reform bill to the Oval Office. That means there's a lot more work left to do, and that it's time to fight.
MAYDAY has not yet decided what action they will be taking in 2016 races. But there’s a way you can help right now.
