Hydraulic fracturing was officially banned by Governor Andrew Cuomo (D) in New York a little over a week ago. But, a discussion regarding an alternative method to fracking began Wednesday morning in Tioga County.
The Snyder Farm Group announced Wednesday at Barton Town Hall that an application was filed Tuesday with the State Department of Environmental Conservation. This
application included a request for two fracking permits from the state.
The Synder Group is looking to develop a natural gas well in Halsey Valley that would utilize propane fracking. Propane fracking has not been banned in New York.
Supporters of fracking say that this method doesn't pollute the water or air, because there is no flow-back fluid. During this fracking process, propane gel is used instead of water. Supporters also predict they will be met with resistance from anti-frackers.
"I think they're going to push back on it," said Daniel Fitzsimmons, of the Joint Landowners Coalition NY. "They don't care how it's done. They don't care how safe it is. They don't care whether it would protect the water."
Carolyn Price, President of the Upstate New York Towns Association, also said, "The DEC needs to expedite this application for natural gas development so Tioga County can start to rebuild its economy and landowners can be shown that the State will allow them to exercise their property rights."
