New York's Attorney General, Eric Schneiderman, prompted by Gov. Cuomo's executive order, announced the formation of a special unit to investigate cases in which people killed by the police are unarmed or serious doubts exist whether they were armed and dangerous.
Mr. Schneiderman said his office was responding to a "crisis in confidence" in the public's perception of the ability of local prosecutors to "look fairly and impartially" at these kinds of cases.
The unit will begin with five prosecutors and be lead by Alvin L. Bragg Jr., the Executive Deputy Attorney General for Social Justice.
It is estimated the unit will handle six to 10 cases a year.
