I attended the opening of National Action Network's 2015 Convention this morning.
National Action Network is one of the leading civil rights organizations in the Nation with chapters throughout the entire United States. Founded in 1991 by Reverend Al Sharpton, NAN works within the spirit and tradition of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. to promote a modern civil rights agenda that includes the fight for one standard of justice, decency and equal opportunities for all people regardless of race, religion, nationality or gender.
At the ribbon cutting, we heard speeches by:
- Reverend Al Sharpton
New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio
- New York State Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman
- New York State Comptroller Thomas Di Napoli
- New York City Comptroller Scott Stringer
This was followed by a Plenary Session speech by Bernie Sanders (I), U.S. Senator from Vermont. He spoke about the issues of the day: Minimum Pay, Income Equality, Healthcare for All, Social Security, Medicare/Medicaid, Education for All, and Equal Justice. At the end of his speech, the large audience rose with "Run, Bernie, Run".
This was followed by a Political Panel titled "America's Choice 2016: Framing the Debate on the Presidential Election".
