Independent Prospects in 2016

A presidential election year is always difficult for Independent candidates, but if anyone has a say in the success of Independent candidates, it is Jim Jonas, who most recently advised Greg Orman's Independent Senate campaign in Kansas in 2014.

Jim Jonas is a political consultant for independent candidates and causes.  His firm, JKJ Partners is based in Denver, Colorado.

Jonas recently released an article of "lessons learned" from the Orman campaign which lays out all the challenges to running as an Independent.

A few hard lessons for independent candidates that were reinforced this past cycle:

- Voters don’t know what “independent” means.

- Starting a campaign from scratch isn’t easy.

- Raising independent campaign money is hard work.

- A few other campaign lessons learned and hazards to anticipate.

- The “system” does not like independents.

- So why should anyone care about viable independents?
