The Senate voted to move forward on the Democracy For All Constitutional Amendment to rein in out-of-control political spending. It will get a full debate on the Senate floor this week.

I heard that this was a political ploy to keep other issues off the table for the remaining days before the election. By tying up the Senate with this debate, items like immigration reform and student loan relief will remain on the shelf and out of public scrutiny.
The amendment is almost certain to fail, as it would need to win two-thirds support to pass the Senate, and then would still need to move through the House and be ratified by two-thirds of the states.
The amendment from Sen. Tom Udall (D-N.M.) would authorize Congress and the states to regulate and limit fundraising and spending on federal candidates. It would also prohibit the Supreme Court from reversing any future campaign finance legislation passed by Congress.
UPDATE
The Senate just overwhelmingly voted to defeat the Republicans' filibuster of a constitutional amendment to overturn Citizens United. With the Republican filibuster broken, the Senate is now set to publicly debate the amendment, a major step forward in the fight to get corporate money out of politics.
Do you think the amendment, as written, is too restrictive?
