New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said Monday that the city would give undocumented immigrants identity papers to allow them to live more normal lives.
"To all of my fellow New Yorkers who are undocumented, I say: New York City is your home too, and we will not force any of our residents to live their lives in the shadows," de Blasio said in a speech at Queens College.
The initiative's aim is to ensure that undocumented residents are able to do things like open bank accounts, sign leases and gain access to basic services.
"We will protect the almost half-million undocumented New Yorkers whose voices too often go unheard," de Blasio said.
In his first interview with a Spanish news network since being elected mayor, Bill de Blasio said Tuesday he would support giving undocumented New Yorkers driver's licenses, a position he has taken before.
During an interview on Univision's 41 local news show, de Blasio said he would back legislation for driver's licenses for undocumented immigrants if the federal government failed to pass immigration reform.
"That's something that I believe in now, [driver's licenses]," he said. "Colorado, not particularly a progressive state did it, so why not us?"
Sanctuary city is a term given to a city in the United States that follows certain practices that protect illegal immigrants. These practices can be by law (de jure) or they can be by habit (de facto).
Did de Blasio make New York City a Sanctuary City with these Identity Papers?
Would you get the identity papers if you were undocumented?
