Florida Governor Rick Scott’s Secretary of State just issued new rules prohibiting voters from dropping off their absentee ballots at public libraries and other convenient locations. The move will make it harder for voters who like to save postage by dropping off their ballots at an early voting site.
Governor Scott has one of the worst records in the country on voting rights, in a swing state with a troubled history of voter suppression. But this is only one of the 90 new attacks on voting rights considered across 33 states in this year alone.
Last year the state infamously removed hundreds of suspected non-citizens from the voting rolls. Later analysis showed that the purge targeted many voting-eligible U.S. citizens, mainly Latino, African, and Asian Americans.
One elections supervisor, who was not consulted prior to the change, summed it up perfectly: “Why create a problem when none currently exists?”
