Government Closing and the Voting Rights Act

The effect of the government closing on the Justice Department's Voting Rights division has created three major problems:

1. After the Supreme Court rejected the current formula to determine which states or counties fall under Section 5 (Preclearence), the voting rights division had to send lawyers into the field to find voter rights violations.  The thousands of lawyers are now grounded and can only work on cases affecting life or property rights.

2. Current voting rights cases against Texas, South Carolina, and Arizona are now on hold. In each case, the court has been ask for a hold and rescheduling after the government reopens.

3. This month there are a number of local elections that would normally have voting rights lawyers monitoring the process. There will be no monitoring this month.

How many ways can our rights be denied?
