It's official. Rangel survives the toughest reelection primary fight of his 42 year House career.
New York Democrat Adriano Espaillat conceded for the second time, after the New York City Board of Elections final count had Rangel with a 1,086 vote lead. He dropped his lawsuits for the bungled count of the ballots, no bilingual poll watches, and his voters being turned away at the polls.
Espaillat's hand was also forced by the political calendar. He must declare this week for his reelection to the state Senate, where a potentially competitive primary awaits him. In New York you can not run for more then one position at the same time.
Rangel's primary win virtually assures him a 22nd term in the Harlem-area district, which is strongly Democratic.
