Africa-U.S. Relations Must Get Past Trump

Africa and the U.S. had tense Relations during the Trump years. Trump made his feelings for the Continent blatantly clear, so there’s work to be done to improve things. This week, there is Summit that aims to do just that and create fresh Policy Ideas and Partnerships.

African Leaders will be in Washington, D.C. this week, for a Joint Summit with U.S. Officials aiming to tackle: Food Security, form Partnerships on tricky Global Challenges, and expand Trade and Investment.

The stakes are High for the U.S. Africa Leaders Summit, if they want to show a fundamental shift in U.S. Policy and Attitudes.

There must be more than just Pageantry, Canned Speeches, and a parade of preplanned Announcements. Rather, it needs to deliver concrete Policies, Agreements, and Business Deals.

“This shouldn’t be just a photo op, but an opportunity to engage on a shared vision,” Analyst Nathan Chiume says: “Africa needs structural changes that the U.S. can help with. The U.S. can work with Africa on post-COVID economic recovery, job creation, equity on natural resources.”

The gathering comes at a troublesome time for the Continent. Africa faces a barrage of Aftershocks from the Pandemic, lingering Economic Trauma, Steep Inflation, and a Mounting Debt Crisis, as well as rising Fuel and Food Prices and Devastating Natural Disasters linked to Climate Change.

We expect News on a Digital Initiative for the Continent, and Commitments from the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, the Millennium Challenge Corporation, and Prosper Africa.

“There have been calls for the U.S. to encourage private investment in targeted sectors … to assist African institutions access global financing at competitive rates,” writes Ambassador Serge Mombouli of the Republic of Congo and Ambassador Mohamed Siad Douale of Djibouti. “Ideally, the summit will lend momentum to such consequential proposals.”
