Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp (R) has begun Informing Republican Officials he Plans to Appoint Financial Services Executive Kelly Loeffler to the State’s soon-to-be Vacant Senate Seat.
Members of the State’s Republican Congressional Delegation were among those to receive a Heads-Up from Kemp on his Decision.
The Choice could face Serious Backlash from Conservatives.
President Trump has told Kemp he Favors Rep. Doug Collins (R-9th District), a staunch Ally and the Top Republican on the House Judiciary Committee, for the Appointment.
Kemp took Loeffler to the White House late last month to Meet with the President. But the Meeting did Not go as Planned. Trump raised pointed Concerns about whether Loeffler, who has never Run for Elected Office Before, is Seasoned enough in Politics to receive the nod.
Trump also noted during the Sit-Down that Loeffler was Not an Original Backer of his 2016 Campaign. He said he couldn’t be sure how his Supporters would Respond to her Selection.
A Handful of Right-of-Center Groups have also come out Against Loeffler, saying she Lacks Conservative Credentials. Some Party Officials worry that her Appointment could Lead to a Messy 2020 Electoral Fight, with other Republicans Challenging her for the Party’s Nomination. Collins has said he is considering Waging a Primary Campaign in the Event he isn’t picked.
But Kemp has held firm. Those close to the Governor say he believes Loeffler will Help the Party Appeal to Suburban and Female Voters who’ve Drifted from the GOP since Trump took Office.
The exact timing of Kemp’s Announcement is unclear, though Party Officials have begun Preparing a Public Rollout.
The Governor's Selection Process has played out for months. Kemp Opened an Online Portal for People to Apply for the Seat, which GOP Sen. Johnny Isakson is Vacating at the End of the year for Health Reasons.
Loeffler considered Running for Senate in 2014 before deciding the Timing wasn’t Right. She’s the Chief Executive of Bakkt, a Bitcoin Trading Platform based in Atlanta, and is a Co-Owner of the City’s WNBA Team. Loeffler would be Only the Second Woman to Represent Georgia in the U.S. Senate.
In her Application for the Senate Opening, Loeffler described herself as a “political outsider” and touted her Business Experience. But she also Portrayed herself as a Staunch Ally to the President, something Conservative Opponents have called into Question.
“If chosen, I will stand with President Trump, Senator Perdue, and you to Keep America Great,” Loeffler wrote. “Together, we will grow jobs, strengthen the border, shutdown drug cartels and human traffickers, lower health care costs, and protect our national interests — at home and abroad.”
Trump and his Allies had been Pushing hard for Collins. Had he gotten the Post, Collins could have been a Potentially Critical Juror in any Senate Impeachment Trial, soon after he helps Lead the Case for Trump in the House.
But some Republicans have been eager for a Senate Appointee with a Less Partisan Profile to help the Party Regain its Standing in the Atlanta Suburbs, an Area where GOP Support has Cratered since 2016, especially among Women.
Collins told POLITICO last month that he would consider Running for Senate in 2020 even if Kemp doesn’t Appoint him to the Seat, which some in the GOP worry could Complicate the “Jungle” style Special Election Race in the State.
