As One New York Mayor prepares to Enter the Presidential Race, another is finding his already Abandoned Candidacy is still Causing him Trouble.
Current Mayor Bill de Blasio appears to have Run Afoul of Campaign Finance Rules in his Short-Lived White House Bid, the Federal Election Commission (FEC) said in a Letter to his Political Action Committee.
The Mayor's Fairness PAC, ostensibly Set-Up to Help Candidates other than Himself, Spent $123,000 on Presidential Polling in the Run-Up to de Blasio's Campaign Announcement.
Election Law Required the Mayor's Campaign to Pay Back the PAC for these Expenses within 30 days of Announcing his Run, but Team de Blasio Blew the Deadline.
The FEC Letter Demands a Corrective Action Plan by Next Month.
Jon Paul Lupo, who Worked on de Blasio's Campaign and Now Heads the Fairness PAC, says the FEC Letter is "nothing new", because the Mayor's Tendency to Play Fast and Loose with Campaign Finance Rules is so well Documented.
But the Feds may Disagree. The FEC's Letter Warns of possible "further legal action regarding the acceptance of an excessive contribution."
UPDATE
The Mayor received his Third Warning Letter in Three Months from the Federal Election Commission (FEC) over apparent Fundraising Violations for his Failed 2020 Bid. The Letters stem from a $52,581 Debt his Cash-Strapped Presidential Campaign Owed to his State Political Account, NY Fairness PAC, which he used to Pay for 2020-related Expenses. The latest Missive, filed Nov. 21st, says the Repayment of that Loan on Sept. 11th Constitutes a Prohibited Transfer or Contribution because it's Over the $5,000 Limit. De Blasio Dropped Out of the Democratic Primary Race just Nine days later. It's the Second Letter de Blasio's gotten from the FEC this week.
