State Voting Requirement Chart for 2016 Presidential Primaries and Caucus


Alabama - Open Primaries. Can vote regardless of your registered Party. The deadline for registration in-person is Feb 12th, but you can register online until Feb 15th. Primary is on Tue, March 1, 2016.

Alaska - Closed Caucuses. Must be registered in Party to vote. However, you can register and/or change your affiliation the day of the caucus. Online registration available. Only 17? If you will be 18 by November 8, 2016, you can vote in the caucuses! Caucus is on Sat, March 26, 2016. Register by Sat, March 26, 2016 or Same-Day registration.

Arizona - Closed Primaries. Must be registered in Party to vote. Online registration available. Note: This is for the Presidential Preference Election which takes place before the Primary on August 30, 2016. Primary is on Tue, March 22, 2016. Register By Mon, February 22, 2016.

Arkansas - Open Primaries. Can vote regardless of your registered Party. Absentee and overseas ballots can be requested as late as February 29, 2016 if the request is made in person. Primary is on Tue, March 1, 2016. Register by February 1, 2016.

California - Semi-closed Primaries. Must be registered in Party or 'No Party Preference' to vote. Online registration available. Primary is on Tue, June 7, 2016. Register by Mon, May 23, 2016.

Colorado - Closed Caucuses. Must be registered in Party to vote. Online registration available. Register by January 4, 2016. The only exception is voters turning 18 between Jan. 1st, 2016 and March 1st, 2016, who may still register including on the day of the Caucus. Caucus is on Tue, March 1, 2016. Colorado will not vote for a Republican candidate for President at its 2016 caucus. Republicans still will hold precinct caucus meetings in 2016 to begin the process of selecting delegates for the national convention, but the 37 delegates are not pledged to any specific candidate.

Connecticut - Closed Primaries. Must be registered in Party to vote. Online registration available. Note Unaffiliated voters must change to a Party by April 25th, 2016, at 12:00pm to vote. Primary is on Tue, April 26, 2016. Register by Thu, April 21, 2016, Party affiliate by January 26, 2016. Same-Day registration.

Delaware - Closed Primaries. Must be registered in Party to vote. Online registration available. Note: The deadline for new voters is April 2, 2016 but existing voters must be registered in a Party by February 26, 2016. Primary on Tue, April 26, 2016. Register by Sat, April 2, 2016. Party Affiliate by Fri, February 26, 2016.

Washington, DC - Closed Primaries. Must be registered in Party to vote. Online registration available. Only 17? If you will be 18 by November 8, 2016, you can vote in the Primaries. Primary is on Tue, June 14, 2016. Register by Mon, May 23, 2016, Party affiliate by Mon, May 16, 2016.

Florida - Closed Primaries. Must be registered in Party to vote. Primary is on
Tue, March 15, 2016. Register by Tue, February 16, 2016.

Georgia - Open Primaries. Can vote regardless of your registered party. Online registration available. Primary is on Tue, March 1, 2016. Register by February 1, 2016.

Hawaii - Closed Caucuses. Must be registered in Party to vote. Online registration available. Only 17? If you will be 18 by November 8, 2016, you can vote in the caucuses. Note: When registering, be sure to indicate your Party preference. Caucus is on Sat, March 26, 2016. Register by Sat, March 26, 2016. Same-Day registration.

Idaho - Open Caucuses. Can vote regardless of your registered party. Caucus is on Tue, March 22, 2016. Register by Tue, March 22, 2016. Same-Day registration.

Illinois - Semi-Closed Primaries. Can request a Democratic ballot to vote on election day. Online registration available. Only 17? If you will be 18 by November 8, 2016, you can vote in the primaries. Primary is on Tue, March 15, 2016. Register by
Tue, February 16, 2016. Same-Day registration.

Indiana - Open Primaries. Can vote regardless of court registered party. Online registration available. Only 17? If you will be 18 by November 8, 2016, you can vote in the primaries. Primary is on Tue, May 3, 2016. Register by Mon, April 4, 2016.

Iowa - Semi-Open Caucuses. If registered as a Republican cannot vote for a Democrat. Can change Party affiliation at the caucus. Online registration available.
Only 17? If you will be 18 by November 8, 2016, you can vote in the caucuses. Caucus on February 1, 2016. Register by February 1, 2016. Same-Day registration.

Kansas - Closed Caucuses. Must be registered in Party to vote. However may register or update registration on the day of the caucus. Online registration available. Only 17? If you will be 18 by November 8, 2016, you can vote in the caucuses. Caucus is on Sat, March 5, 2016. Register by Sat, March 5, 2016. Same-Day registration.

Kentucky - Closed Primaries. Must be registered in Party to vote. Only 17? If you will be 18 by November 8, 2016, you can vote in the Primaries. Primary on Tue, May 17, 2016. Register by Mon, April 18, 2016. Affiliate with a Party by December 31, 2015.

Louisiana - Closed Primaries. Must be registered in Party to vote. Online registration available. Primary is on Sat, March 5, 2016. Register by February 3, 2016.

Maine - Closed Caucuses. Must be registered in Party to vote. Only 17? If you will be 18 by November 8, 2016, you can vote in the caucuses. May register and affiliate with a Party at the Caucus. Caucus on Sun, March 6, 2016. Register by Fri, February 19, 2016.

Maryland - Closed Primaries. Must be registered in Party to vote. Online registration available. Only 17? If you will be 18 by November 8, 2016, you can vote in the primaries. Primary is on Tue, April 26, 2016. Register by Tue, April 5, 2016.

Massachusetts - Semi-Closed Primaries. Must be registered in Party to vote. But undeclared voters can vote in the Democratic Primary. Online registration available. Primary is on Tue, March 1, 2016. Register by Wed, February 10, 2016.

Michigan - Open Primaries. Voters do not have to declare a Party to vote, but must vote for a single Party. Primary is on Tue, March 8, 2016. Register by Mon, February 8, 2016.

Minnesota - Open Caucuses. Can vote for any Party regardless of your registered Party. Online registration available. Only 17? If you will be 18 by November 8, 2016, you can vote in the caucuses. You only need to be eligible to vote to participate in the Caucus. You must still register to vote in the Primary, which happens after the Caucus. Caucus is on Tue, March 1, 2016. Register by Tue, March 1, 2016. Same-Day registration.

Mississippi - Open Primaries. Can vote for any Party, regardless of your registered Party. Only 17? If you will be 18 by November 8, 2016, you can vote in the primaries. Primary is on Tue, March 8, 2016. Register by Sat, February 6, 2016.

Missouri - Open Primaries. Can vote for any Party regardless of your registered Party. Online registration available. Primary is on Tue, March 15, 2016. Register by
Wed, February 17, 2016.

Montana - Open Primaries. Can vote for any Party regardless of your registered party. Primary is on Tue, June 7, 2016. Register by Mon, May 9, 2016. Same-Day registration.

Nebraska - Closed Caucuses. Must be registered in Party to vote. May register or update registration on the day of the caucus. Online registration available.
Only 17? If you will be 18 by November 8, 2016, you can vote in the caucuses. Caucus is on Sat, March 5, 2016. Register by Sat, March 5, 2016.

New Hampshire - Semi-Closed Primaries. Must be registered in Party to vote. However, new and undeclared voters are able to register and change Party at the Primary. Note: The deadline to update affiliation by registered voters was October 30th, 2015. Primary is on Tue, February 9, 2016. Register by January 30, 2016.

New Jersey - Closed Primaries. Must be registered in Party to vote. However, undeclared voters are able to change party at Primary. Primary is on Tue, June 7, 2016. Register by Tue, May 17, 2016. Affiliate with a Party by Wed, April 13, 2016.

New Mexico - Closed Primaries. Must be registered in Party to vote. Online registration available. Primary is on Tue, June 7, 2016. Register by Tue, May 10, 2016.

New York - Closed Primaries. Must be registered in Party to vote. Online registration available. Primary is on Tue, April 19, 2016. Register by Fri, March 25, 2016. Note: This deadline for new voters only. Registered voters had to change their Party affiliation by October 9, 2015.

North Carolina - Semi-Closed Primaries. Must be registered in Party to vote. Undeclared voters can vote in the Democrat's Primary. Only 17? If you will be 18 by November 8, 2016, you can vote in the primaries. Primary is on Tue, March 15, 2016. Register by Fri, February 19, 2016.

North Dakota - Open Caucuses. There is no voter registration in North Dakota.
Only 17? If you will be 18 by November 8, 2016, you can vote in the caucuses. Caucus is on Tue, June 7, 2016.

Ohio - Closed Primaries?. No Party registration, but must be registered. Only 17? If you will be 18 by November 8, 2016, you can vote in the primaries. Note: You request a Party ballot at the Primary. Primary is on Tue, March 15, 2016. Register by
Tue, February 16, 2016.

Oklahoma - Semi-Closed Primaries. Must be registered in Party to vote. Independents can vote in the Democratic Primary. Primary is on Tue, March 1, 2016. Register by Fri, February 5, 2016.

Oregon - Closed Primaries. Must be registered in Party to vote. Online registration available. Primary is on Tue, May 17, 2016. Register by Tue, April 26, 2016.

Pennsylvania -Closed Primaries. Must be registered in Party to vote. Online registration available. Primary is on Tue, April 26, 2016. Register by Mon, March 28, 2016.

Puerto Rico - Open Primaries. Although Puerto Ricans are currently not able to vote in General elections, residents are able to vote in their Primaries. Primary is on Sun, June 5, 2016. Register by Sat, April 16, 2016.

Rhode Island - Semi-Closed Primaries. Must be registered in Party to vote. Undeclared voters can vote in the Democratic Primary. Primary is on Tue, April 26, 2016. Register by Sun, March 27, 2016. Affiliate with a Party by January 27, 2016.

South Carolina - Open Primaries. Can vote in any Party Primary regardless of their registered party. Online registration available. Only 17? If you will be 18 by November 8, 2016, you can vote in the primaries. Primary is on Sat, February 27, 2016. Register by January 27, 2016.

South Dakota - Semi-Open Primaries. Must be registered in Party to vote. But undeclared can vote in the Democratic Primary. Primary is on Tue, June 7, 2016. Register by Mon, May 23, 2016.

Tennessee - Open Primaries. Can vote in any Party Primary regardless of your registered party. Primary is on Tue, March 1, 2016. Register by February 1, 2016.

Texas - Open Primaries. Can vote in any Party Primary regardless of your registered party. Primary is on Tue, March 1, 2016. Register by February 1, 2016.

Utah - Semi-Open Caucuses. Must vote in Party Primary. Undeclared can vote in the Democratic Primary. Online registration available. Only 17? If you will be 18 by November 8, 2016, you can vote in the caucuses. Caucus is on Tue, March 22, 2016. Register by Mon, February 22, 2016.
