NY Gov. Adds Four Special Elections in 2016

New York Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo issued a proclamation setting an April 19th Special election date for the 59th, 62nd and 65th Assembly Districts, as well as the 9th Senate District.

This date, which coincides with the Presidential Primary election, was chosen in order to both maximize voter turnout and minimize the cost to taxpayers.

But officials say the practical problems means voters must be restricted to cast Primary ballots only in the party in which they are registered. At the same time, all voters must be allowed to cast ballots in the their districts’ Special elections regardless of how they are enrolled.

Handling the separate ballots together means adjustments in how computer software and machinery are set up and how polling sites are configured and assigned. Another concern is assuring the availability of enough machines and devices required for disabled voters.

Also, absentee, military, and overseas voters will need separate ballots and the Board of Elections make sure that ballots are sent to the correct eligible voters.
