NY 2016 Presidential Primary Rules


New York State holds Presidential Primaries on April 19, 2016.

The Republicans have one plan, Democrats have another plan, and there are separate plans for: minor parties, Independent candidates, and write-in candidates.

Republican
- Candidates submits petition with 5,000 signatures or 5% of registered members, which ever is less.
- Candidates who get Presidential Primary matching funds.
- Rep. Commissioner of State Board of Elections determines candidate is nationally known.

Democrats
- Candidates submits petition with 5,000 signatures.

Minor Party
The State Board of Elections says any other qualified party may have a Presidential primary, and is free to choose either the Republican plan or the Democratic plan. They also could use a statewide convention.

Independent Candidate
- Candidates submits petition with 15,000 signatures, with at least 100 signatures must come from 15 Congressional districts.

Write-In Candidates
File a Certificate of Candidacy with:
- President and Vice-President names, addresses, and signatures.
- the name(s) and address(s) of 1 - 29 electors and a acceptance Certificate and pledge of support.
