The Hunger Site launched in June of 1999. It was the brainchild of, Tim Kunin, co-owner and CEO, a private citizen from Indiana, with the purpose of helping to alleviate world hunger. Creative use of the internet meant that a simple daily click of a button would give funding, paid for by the site's sponsors, to the United Nations World Food Program.
Since its launch, The Hunger Site has established itself as a leader in online activism, helping to feed the world's hungry and food insecure. On average, over 220,000 individuals from around the world visit the site each day to click the yellow Click Here to Give - it's FREE button. Its grassroots popularity has been recognized with Web awards in the activism category, a Cool Site of the Year Award and a People's Voice winner at the Webby Awards. Since its inception, visitors at The Hunger Site and shoppers at The Hunger Site store have given more than 856 million cups of food.
The staple food funded by clicks at The Hunger Site is paid for by site sponsors and distributed to those in need by Mercy Corps, Feeding America (formerly America's Second Harvest), and Millennium Promise. 100% of sponsor advertising fees go to our charitable partners. Funds are split between these organizations and go to the aid of hungry people in over 74 countries, including those in Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe, the Middle East, Latin America and North America.
In the first nine months, the site funded more than nine million pounds of food for the hungry, an astonishing feat. Eventually the site became too large for one man to manage, and in 2000 The Hunger Site was sold to GreaterGood.com, which today operates as the GreaterGood Network family of websites.
Since then, hundreds of millions of people from around the world have clicked and shopped to make a difference, funding more than 852,423,191 cups of food. In addition to 100 percent of sponsor advertising fees, a portion of every sale in the suite of GreaterGood Network stores goes to charity.
The Hunger Site continues its ambitious goal to harness the power of the Internet for good, uniting people around the world to form an online community devoted to the eradication of hunger.
The Hunger Site is the flagship site in the growing GreaterGood Network of cause-related sites, which includes The Breast Cancer Site, The Autism Site, The Veterans Site, The Diabetes Site, The Literacy Site, The Rainforest Site, and The Animal Rescue Site.
Each site is focused on a specific need, and allows supporters to benefit leading charities with simple, everyday online actions. Clicking to give and shopping to give more fund established nonprofit organizations that implement vital programs and initiatives.
More than a decade and half-a-billion clicks later, The Hunger Site remains a leader in online activism and a dynamic force in the fight to end world hunger.
Seattle, WA—Liz Baker, executive director of GreaterGood.org, announced today that a hunger relief grant of $75,000 has been awarded to Community Partners International for the Mae Tao Clinic programs aiding refugee children along the Thai-Burma border.
This funding will be used to provide meals for the children who receive education and care through Mae Tao Clinic’s programs. In the Tak Province of Thailand, there are an estimated 17,000 Burmese children studying in migrant learning centers around Mae Sot. Nearly 3,000 receive all or most of their meals from the Mae Tao Clinic.
You can also donate on the site. Primary beneficiaries of these donations are
Feeding America, Mercy Corps, Partners in Health and Millennium Promise. Additional donations are generated through purchases at The Hunger Site Store, which features a wide variety of fair trade and ethically sourced products including the Global Girlfriend line of clothing and accessories made by women-owned companies around the world.
The Gifts That Give More ™ program enables visitors to make small donations, ranging from $10 to $50, to help specific nonprofit projects, selected charities, or aid in time of disaster. Participation in the Gifts That Give More ™ program is free for the charities involved. GreaterGood covers all fees, including bank charges, so 100% of the donation reaches the selected charity.
Since 1999, GreaterGood has given nearly $30 million dollars to charities across the United States and around the world.
