FL Takes Immigration into Own Hands

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) has announced that the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) can Conduct Immigration Operations, independent of the Trump Administration. DeSantis, standing alongside FHP Officers and Federal Agents in Tampa on Monday, touted the Program as the Nation's First of its kind. "What we have now with FHP is that they can conduct immigration operations wholly independent of the federal government. And there's no one else in the country where they're doing that," DeSantis said at a News Conference.

He added that the troopers "can do everything an immigration officer would do, up until the point" where the individual gets Processed for Removal. Florida has seen Extensive Cooperation between Federal Immigration Authorities and Local State Agencies as the Administration Mobilizes all available resources to implement Mass Deportations, a Central Promise of Trump's (R) 2024 Campaign for the White House.

The State's Collaboration with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is part of the 287(g) Program. The Initiative allows State and Local Law Enforcement Agencies to work alongside ICE, in efforts to Apprehend and Deport Undocumented Immirants.

DeSantis announced on Monday, that more than 100 FHP Troopers had been Sworn-In as Special Deputy U.S. Marshals, giving them the Authority to handle Immigration Cases, including Apprehension and Processing for Deportatio, without Federal Assistance. This Designation also Allows the Troopers to Execute Federal Warrants. In the past, when FHP Troopers came across an Undocumented Driver with a Criminal Record, they could either contact ICE and Wait or Release the Driver. Earlier this year, Sheriffs from All 67 Florida Counties, FHP, and other Agencies signed 287(g) Agreements. The Partnership played a Key Role in the State's Largest Immigration Crackdown, which led to more than 1,100 Arrests under Operation Tidal Wave.

The Trump Administration encouraged Law Enforcement Agencies across the Country to sign 287(g) Agreements because of a Shortage of Federal Officers available to Locate and Process Millions of Undocumented Immigrants. Dave Kerner, the Director of the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, said at the News Conference that Florida Troopers were the First fully Credentialed Law Enforcement Officers to begin functioning under the 287(g) Task Force model. Moving forward, FHP Troopers are set to play a Central Role in Immigration Enforcement under the Expanded 287(g) Program. As the State Enhances its Collaboration with Federal Agencies, the Implementation of these Powers is expected to increase Immigration Arrests and Deportations Statewide.
