NJ Environmental Justice

New Jesey Governor, Phil Murphy (D) Signed Legislation to Require the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) to Evaluate the Environmental and Public Health impacts of certain Projects and Facilities when Reviewing some Permit Applications. If to pursue Environmental Justice throughout New Jersey, we can’t let Overburdened New Jerseyans continue to Bear the Brunt of Environmental and Air Pollutants.

This Legislation makes sure that this won’t happen.

The Legislation applies to certain Permits, like those for: Incinerators; Power Plants; and Sewage Treatment Plants, among other Projects.

For decades Facilities like those have Disproportionately Impacted Low-Income Communities and Communities of Color, resulting in Lasting Negative Impacts on the Health of those Communities.

This Legislation is especially pertinent as Governor Murphy continues to make good on his Promise to bolster New Jersey’s Infrastructure, from Transportation Projects like the Portal North Bridge to Energy Construction like the:

Wind Port Project

Salem County has been slated for a 200-Acre Off-Shore Wind Port, per the Governor who announced the Project and Long Term Operation will yield 1,500 Permanent Jobs and “hundreds” of Construction Jobs in 2021, Murphy said, as well as Producing $500 Million in New Annual Economic Activity.

By Requiring the NJDEP to Evaluate the Effects certain Projects have on Overburdened Communities, New Jersey can begin to Address the Decades of Inaction that have resulted in these Communities being Overburdened by Pollutants.

These Announcements are Major steps forward in Governor Murphy’s Goals of Improving Infrastructure and Fighting for a Stronger, Fairer New Jersey.
