NY Governor Wants To Reopen Closed And Add New Charter Schools


Some New York Elected Officials, are pushing back on Gov. Kathy Hochul’s (D), Proposal to Re-Open Closed Charter Schools and create New Charter Schools, for the First time since 2019.

A Cap was set by the Legislature, which would allow No more than 460 Charter Licenses, to be issued throughout New York.

This move would mean that Charter Operations could apply for New Licenses, and New Permits can be Reissued for now Closed Charter Schools.

Currently there are 357 Charter Schools operating Statewide.

So there is the ability to Start or Reopen 103 Charter Schools Statewide.
