NC Felon Law Like FL Law

A Coalition of Groups, including the North Carolina State NAACP, has filed a Lawsuit to try to Overturn the Law that Prevents People who have been found Guilty of a Felony from Voting until their Sentence is Completed, including Paying All Fines and Fees.

Plaintiffs said this keeps about 60,000 People Statewide from Casting Ballots even though they have Finished serving their Time.

The Groups also have Launched the Unlock Our Vote Campaign to Raise Awareness of the Problem and Generate Pressure on State Lawmakers.

Daryl Atkinson, One of the Attorneys in the Case, was formerly Incarcerated. He said the Law Withholding the Vote from People for Not Paying Fines and Court Fees is a Classic example of Taxation without Representation and a Poll Tax.

Black People are disproportionately impacted by this disenfranchisement. Our expert reports found that although Black people constitute 21% of the voting age population in North Carolina, they represent 42% of the people disenfranchised while on probation, parole, or post-release supervision. In 44 counties, today, the disenfranchisement rate for Black people is more than three times the rate of the white population.
