Brookings Announces David M. Rubenstein Fellowships

Founded in 1916, the Brookings Institution is a Nonprofit Public Policy organization based in Washington, DC. Brookings’s mission is to improve Governance at the Local, National, and Global levels through rigorous Research and Analysis that lead to practical Public Policy
recommendations. Brookings Scholars are dedicated to finding solutions to the today’s great challenges and those over the horizon. Brookings celebrated its centenary in 2016 and launched a new strategic plan to ensure that it enters its second century with continued relevance and a renewed commitment to its core values of Quality, Independence, and Impact.

Brookings Institution President Strobe Talbott announced today the establishment of the David M. Rubenstein Fellowships. As part of the Institution’s strategic plan for its second century, Brookings will appoint outstanding early- and mid-career scholars and experts from the United States and abroad whose work as Rubenstein Fellows will significantly augment and diversify the independent policy research and analysis of Brookings’s more than 100 resident scholars. The first class of Rubenstein Fellows will take up their positions at Brookings by September 2017.

This new program is made possible by a generous multi-million dollar gift from David M. Rubenstein, Co-Chair of the Brookings Board of Trustees, and Co-Founder and Co-Chief Executive officer of the Carlyle Group.

Following a rigorous and competitive application process, the Rubenstein Fellows will be appointed for two-year terms in one or more of Brookings’s five research programs. They will conduct in-depth research and analysis, and generate policy ideas and recommendations on the key governance challenges of the 21st Century. Their work will be disseminated using advanced communications tools and other means designed to maximize the reach and impact of their scholarship. They will also participate in public and private events and contribute to the intellectual life of the Institution.

“I believe strongly not just in Brookings’s work to improve governance locally, nationally and globally, but in the Institution’s commitment to fostering diverse thinking in the ranks of public policy researchers and practitioners,” David Rubenstein said. “Finding solutions to the complex challenges we face requires new and innovative thinking that reflects a variety of perspectives, disciplines and experiences. It is my hope that these new Fellows will contribute in meaningful ways to building the next generation of experts who are committed to Brookings’s high standards of quality, independence, and impact.”

“Our scholars are the lifeblood of Brookings and increasing their diversity—in all its dimensions—is a critical goal of Brookings 2.0, our centennial strategic plan,” Brookings’s President Strobe Talbott said. “David’s vision and generosity enables us to strengthen and grow the intellectual talent at Brookings. We are deeply grateful for his support.”
