Does Your State Count in the 2016 Presidential Race?

From an article by Frank Bruni in the July 25, 2015 The New York Times Op-Ed.

The electoral college system has some pluses and some minuses, but one thing it seems to do is focus a candidate's attention during the Presidential General Election.

In 2012, only 5 states: Florida, Ohio, Colorado, Virginia, and North Carolina, were decided by less than 5% of the vote.

These states have just 17 percent of the population, but accounted for almost three-quarters of the $896 million of television advertising for the Obama-Romney race.

Most small states, and many large states, see no visits from the candidates, because they are not seen as competitive.

Is this what the Founding Fathers intended?
